MPR was started in 2014 by Mike Purton, a musician with a lifetime’s experience in many facets of the music world - performer, teacher, conductor, producer and editor. The label’s mission is to bring unfairly forgotten and overlooked music to life with the finest musicians and highest production values.
MPR also offer the highest quality recording services for external projects - please contact us and we will be happy to discuss further details.
Mike Purton
Mike has been a professional recording producer and editor for almost 30 years, with hundreds of releases to his name, using his own SADiE system in his studio at home for editing and mastering. Having held the position of principal horn in the Halle Orchestra, and teaching positions at several British Conservatoires, Mike brings to the studio his many years of experience as a top-flight professional instrumentalist and teacher, with all the associated musical expertise and sensitivity to pursue excellence in all his projects. Outside of his work at MPR, Mike has years of experience recording solo, brass, wind, chamber and orchestral music for such labels as ASV, BMG, Dutton, EMI, Linn, NAXOS, SRC, Universal, Virgin and Warner.
During the past two decades Mike has, for example, produced many CDs of British chamber music for Dutton Epoch; he is currently recording the complete Piano music of Schumann for Hänssler Classics with the phenomenal German pianist Florian Uhlig; and since the late 90s he has been the main recording producer for the excellent Orquesta Filarmónica de Gran Canaria, producing and editing more than 40 recordings, for labels such as ASV, BMG and Warner Classics. He has also recorded British Orchestras such as the Bournemouth Sinfonietta, the LPO, the RPO, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, the City of London Sinfonia, the Scottish Ensemble and the Ulster Orchestra and with chamber groups such as the Archaeus, Dante and Sorrel Quartets, the London Piano Quartet, the Endymion Ensemble and the Pleyel Ensemble.
Mike is currently working with NAXOS on their series of the complete wind band music of Sousa, recently recording Volumes 22 and 23 with the Band of HM Royal Marines (Plymouth) - a fitting conclusion to the series.
Some years ago Mike also had the pleasure of producing three CDs of Gabrieli’s Brass Music with Eric Crees and the London Symphony Brass for NAXOS. Mike has made a number of recordings with the Wallace Collection for Linn and with the Michael Thompson Wind Ensemble for NAXOS.
Three years ago Mike was invited to become Recording Module Co-ordinator for the highly successful MPerf course at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. Mike has also worked on a number of recording projects sponsored by research funding from both the Royal Academy of Music and the Royal Northern College of Music.
